About the Author
Henry Drummond was born near Stirling, Scotland, on 17 August, 1851. He was educated at the Universities of Edinburgh and Tübingen. His life was largely spent in the work of the Toynbee Order and in scientific and other travel. He accompanied Sir Archibald Geikie (Director-General of the Geological Survey) in a survey of the Rocky Mountains in 1878, made an exploration in Central Africa in 1884-85, and travelled widely in Australia and the Far East. He later became Professor of Natural Science at the College of the Free Church of Scotland.

His best known work is probably The Greatest Thing in the World, a commentary on Chapter 13 of St Paul's first letter to the Corinthians.
Professor Drummond died in 1897.
Although written from the point of view of someone in the pay of a Scottish Presbyterian Church which still clings to a belief in the absolute authority of the King James Authorised Version of the Christian Bible, Dr Drummond's words can be read with benefit by anyone, regardless of race or religion, because they stimulate discussion about matters which remain contentious and afford the unconstrained modern scientific mystic plenty of opportunity for further clarification.
