Introduction

by The Editor

April, 2005

The original Seeker Magazine was published quarterly during the latter half of the last century by Academic Publications, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, owned by the late Bruce Copen, Ph.D., D.Litt. I first met Bruce about thirty years ago and was privileged to enjoy his friendship until his death in 1998.

Bruce was one of the most industrious people and prolific writers I have ever met. He began his writing career early in life and by the time he reached his maturity (twenty-one, in those days!), he had written no fewer than fifteen stage plays as well as numerous books of poetry and belles lettres. He studied and researched many subjects, his versatile talents being recognised world-wide. His books, study courses, and articles have been translated into French, German, and Swedish. His contribution to adult education was rewarded by his being installed as Knight of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem (Danish sector) in 1970.

Bruce served as Editor of the British Journal of Radiosthesia (1954-60), Editor of Natural Therapeutics Journal (1965-71), and finally as Editor of the Seeker Magazine. He was also the Principal of a College and President of the International College of Radionics.

When the Rosicrucian Beacon was launched in 1991 and I was privileged to become its editor, I asked Bruce if I could reproduce the articles he had published in the Seeker Magazine, and naturally he was delighted that these would be going out to new readers. He told me just to publish whatever I wished and there was no need ever to make formal application to him — a typical response from this man whose life was dedicated to research and the quest for truth.

Choosing the name of The Seeker for this new magazine, therefore, is my special tribute to Bruce, although the title of the magazine is, in my opinion, the only possible name for it! After all is said and done, we are all seekers in the quest for truth. Anyone, or any organisation, professing to have all the answers, wandered off the path of truth long ago! We are right to view all such claims with suspicion and healthy scepticism. It is not our policy in The Seeker to publish the propaganda of vested interests, cults, dogmas, or creeds of any who have attempted to imprison the Spirit of Truth in a solid form, permitting no new growth.

The Seeker is a magazine dedicated to the search for truth and the publication of any information coming to light which carries us that step further. We welcome articles from those who can contribute new or rediscovered knowledge that can be of value to us all, fellow seekers, in our ongoing journey into the millennium and beyond.

Mission Statement

"We are all seekers in the quest for truth".

The logo for The Seeker is intended to depict man in his higher aspirations, his potential of becoming — becoming far more than the physical or material man to which he has been bound in the past. He sits astride the winged horse, ascending from his former Earthly limitations. The symbolism further portrays the inherent power of his intent, the power of his one true desire to rise in spirit above the restrictions that he may have formerly accepted and suffered.

Symbolism belongs to the world of archetypes, and expresses truth in a way that mere words cannot possibly convey. To hear the national anthem played when one is far from one's homeland is an example of the power of symbolism, for at that moment of recognition and identification is summarised all that our homeland means to us. Carl Jung in his book, Man and His Symbols, has this to say of symbols of transcendence: "... these symbols do not seek to integrate the initiate with any religious doctrine or secular group-consciousness. On the contrary, they [highlight] man's need for liberation from any state of being that is too immature, too fixed, or final. ...They concern man's release from, or transcendence of, any confining pattern of existence, as he moves toward a superior or more mature stage in his development."

Thus we have the true Seeker that dwells within each and every one of us.
